What Is the German Practice of Lüften?

Lüften is the simple yet intentional practice of regularly airing out your home by opening windows wide for a short period of time, even in the middle of winter. Stoßlüften (Shock Ventilation) 

This method involves opening several windows fully at once to create a rapid air exchange. After about 5–10 minutes, the windows are closed again. The goal is to refresh the air quickly without allowing walls and furniture to cool down, which helps minimize heat and energy loss. 

Querlüften (Cross Ventilation) 

With querlüften, windows on opposite sides of a room or home are opened simultaneously. This creates a strong cross breeze that efficiently flushes out stale air and ventilates the space even faster. 

How Lüften Works 

The purpose of lüften is to replace stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air. Over time, everyday living causes carbon dioxide, humidity, bacteria, allergens, and even mold spores to build up indoors.   • Spring and Fall: Ventilate for 10–15 minutes, twice a day. 
  • Winter: Shorter sessions are best—open windows for 5–10 minutes, once or twice daily. This allows fresh air in without excessive heat loss. 

The key is opening windows wide for a short time rather than leaving them slightly open for hours.
